The Sopore encounter in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir resulted in the elimination of two Pakistani terrorists belonging to the proscribed Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terror outfit. [1]
According to the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the slain terrorists were identified as Sanam Zafar, a resident of Mirpur in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), and Abdul Wahab from Pakistan's Rawalpindi. [1] The duo had infiltrated into the Kashmir valley and were hiding in the forests of north Kashmir before making their way to Sopore town around a month ago. [1]
The encounter began on Thursday at Check Mohalla Nowpora in Sopore and one terrorist was killed that night. Fighting resumed on Friday morning, leading to the elimination of the second terrorist in the fresh exchange of gunfire. [1][3]
The police said the two Pakistani terrorists were members of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, a proscribed terrorist organization that has been actively involved in carrying out attacks and reviving terror networks in Jammu and Kashmir. [1][2]
Two Army personnel and a civilian also sustained injuries in the gunbattle and have been shifted to a hospital for treatment. A combing operation is underway in the area to flush out any remaining terrorists. [1]
This encounter is the latest in a series of operations conducted by security forces to dismantle the terror infrastructure in the region. The authorities have also been taking action against terrorist handlers and associates who have exfiltrated to Pakistan or PoK and are trying to revive the terror ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir. [4]
The elimination of these two Pakistani LeT terrorists is a significant blow to the group's attempts to infiltrate and carry out attacks in the Kashmir valley. The security forces remain vigilant and committed to rooting out the menace of cross-border terrorism. [1][2]
