DRDO conduct "High-Altitude Trials" Very Short-Range Air Defence System


In a significant development, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is set to conduct high-altitude trials of its indigenous Man Portable Air Defence System (MANPAD), VSHORAD. This move marks a crucial step forward in the development of the system, which is designed to neutralize low-altitude aerial threats at short ranges.


The VSHORAD system, developed by Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and Indian industry partners, has already demonstrated its capabilities in several successful flight tests. These trials have shown the system's ability to intercept and destroy high-speed unmanned aerial targets under different scenarios, meeting all mission objectives.


The upcoming high-altitude trials are expected to further test the system's capabilities in a more challenging environment. The trials will be conducted at a location such as Ladakh or Sikkim, where the system will be put through its paces at higher altitudes. This will help to validate the system's performance and ensure that it can effectively neutralize threats at various heights.


The VSHORAD system is designed to be highly portable and is propelled by a dual-thrust solid motor. It incorporates advanced technologies such as miniaturized Reaction Control Systems (RCS) and integrated avionics, which have been successfully proven during previous tests.


The successful development and testing of VSHORAD will significantly enhance India's air defence capabilities, providing a robust and indigenous solution to counter low-altitude aerial threats. The system is planned to be inducted into the Indian Armed Forces, with the Indian Army and Air Force set to receive a total of 500 launchers and 3,000 missiles.


The high-altitude trials of VSHORAD are expected to be followed by user trials by the Indian Armed Forces, which will further validate the system's performance and readiness for operational deployment.
