The first-ever direct flight between India and Cambodia was officially inaugurated on June 16, 2024. The flight, which connects New Delhi and Phnom Penh, was launched by Deputy Prime Minister of Cambodia Neth Savoeun and Indian Ambassador to Cambodia Devyani Khobragade.
The direct flight, operated by Cambodia's national flag carrier Cambodia Angkor Air, will run four times a week. This new service is expected to enhance travel convenience for tourists and strengthen the historic ties between the two countries. The Embassy of India in Phnom Penh hailed the development as a "historic moment," citing India's "Act East" Policy.
The new connection is also expected to make the Angkor Archaeological Park, a UNESCO-listed world heritage site, more accessible to Indian tourists. Additionally, it will provide Cambodian patients better access to medical treatments in India. Cambodia Angkor Air expressed optimism about the potential and positive impact of this new service, citing the rich histories and mutual interests of the two nations.
The launch of the direct flight marks a significant milestone in the cultural and linguistic connect between India and Cambodia. The restoration of Angkor Wat and Preah Vihear temples in Cambodia by India is a testament to the historical and civilisational links between the two countries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has often highlighted the historical and civilisational ties between India and Cambodia.
The direct flight is expected to boost tourism and cultural exchange between the two nations, further strengthening their bilateral ties.
