To cut down the carbon emissions for the Indian aviation industry, as reported earlier that Sustainable Air Fuel (SAF) can play a huge role; however, its large scale production is marred with challenges.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has begun using new technology to reduce carbon emissions in accordance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070.
The Bio-Jet Fuel project was led by the IAF as a Technology Demonstration to lessen the aviation industry's carbon footprint. And it aims to use mixed bio-jet fuel for as many of its aerial platforms as possible. "Ground tests for the Dornier aircraft are probably going to start soon. For fighter aircraft, feasibility studies are also in progress, a top IAF official disclosed to Financial Express Online.
Worldwide, the aviation industry, including both commercial and military aviation, is a significant source of carbon emissions. And nations all around the world are looking into eco-friendly methods to reduce these emissions. India is also concentrating on sustainable fuel and participates in a number of organisations and forums that address green fuel.
"Last November, the IAF received airworthiness certification from the Centre for Military Airworthiness & Certification (CEMILAC) as a result of the AN-32 aircraft's successful trials. According to the officer who was quoted above, this was for the Bio-Jet blend with a 10:90 ratio.
The Council for Scientific & Industrial Research Indian Institute of Petroleum, Dehradun, produces and supplies the Bio-Jet Fuel that CEMILAC has approved for use in aviation, as was previously stated. The hydrocarbon-type Bio-Jet Fuel is created by converting lipids through a single catalytic hydro processing step of fatty acids and esters.
And the IAF is presently sourcing Bio-Jet Fuel from CSIR, IIP only. It is understood that MRPL, Mangalore is in process of setting up a production plant with ToT from CSIR, IIP Dehradun.
As previously noted, Sustainable Air Fuel (SAF) can play a significant role in reducing carbon emissions for the Indian aviation industry; yet, its large-scale production is hampered by difficulties.
Carbon-free fuel is anticipated to be adopted by the US Air Force. e-Aviation fuel is reportedly being produced by the carbon transformation business "Twelve" in 2021. The USAF provided funding for the development of this fossil-free jet fuel. Additionally, both commercial and military aircraft can use this fuel.
The US-based Twelve and Emerging Fuels Technology have created a gasoline without any fossil fuels. Additionally, this fuel can be utilised in place of petrochemical-based alternatives without requiring any changes to the plane's or commercial aircraft's design.
