The Indian Air Force (IAF) is taking a significant step towards environmental sustainability by exploring the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for its Airbus A321 Netra MkII Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AEW&CS) platforms. In collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS), this initiative aims to promote greener aviation practices and reduce carbon emissions.
The IAF has initiated the "Commercial to Green Aircraft Conversion of Six Airbus A-321 Aircraft" project, which seeks to transform conventional aircraft into environmentally friendly "Green Aircraft." These aircraft are designed and operated with a focus on minimizing their environmental impact.
Already, the IAF has taken steps towards eco-friendly aviation by using blended biodiesel in modified AN-32 transport aircraft. This effort showcases the IAF's commitment to environmentally conscious aviation practices, with the AN-32 fleet alone consuming over 3,000 kiloliters of blended biofuel.
Expanding on its success with blended biofuels, the IAF plans to extend its green initiatives to its entire fleet, including helicopters, transport aircraft, and fighter jets, in the coming years. This strategic move underscores the IAF's dedication to exploring sustainable aviation fuel alternatives and reducing its overall carbon footprint.
