ISRO Chief Warns of Catastrophic Asteroid Impact, Calls for Global Preparedness [1][2][4]
In a stark warning, the head of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Dr. S Somanath, has emphasized the real and alarming possibility of an asteroid striking Earth and causing mass extinction.
Somanath stated that if such an event were to occur, "we all are extinct." He pointed to the Apophis asteroid, considered one of the most hazardous near-Earth objects, which is expected to make close approaches to Earth in 2029 and 2036. [1][4]
The ISRO chief stressed the urgent need for advancements in technology to predict and deflect potential asteroid impacts. He noted that while such catastrophic events may not happen within a human lifespan, they are frequent occurrences in the history of the universe. [1][2][4]
"These are real possibilities. We must prepare ourselves. This should not happen to our Earth. The human race and all living beings must survive here," Somanath said. He emphasized the importance of international collaboration, stating that "as a leading space nation, we need to take responsibility" for addressing this global threat. [1][2][4]
ISRO has initiated focused planetary defense activities and is planning to participate in a mission to study the Apophis asteroid when it comes close to Earth in 2029. The agency is also considering collaborating with other space organizations like JAXA and ESA on joint asteroid monitoring and deflection efforts. [1][4][5]
Somanath's warnings underscore the urgent need for the global community to invest in research, technology development, and coordinated action to enhance humanity's ability to detect and mitigate the dangers posed by hazardous asteroids. The future of our planet may depend on our preparedness for such catastrophic events. [1][2][4]
